The Obesity Epidemic
Posted by mrparr on September 21, 2008
The obesity epidemic worldwide is escalating beyond control. This short video clip below gives an indication of the problem in the worlds most affected area, the U.S.A. This problem continues to get worse year by year and what’s even more worrying is that ‘childhood obesity’ is on the rise.
The incidence of obesity is also particularly common in Scotland where more than one third of Scotland’s 12-year-olds are now overweight with an alarming 19% classified as obese.
It is commonly known that a healthy diet coupled with regular exercise are tools which can control weight. This is only ONE of the reasons we in the PE Department encourage you to participate in as much exercise as is healthy. We are providing you with a host of sports and activities such as those on ‘Sports Day Wednesday’ and additional extra-curricular activities in the morning, lunchtime and after school (for example, football, volleyball, netball). The full list of activities will be posted around school soon.
We want to provide sports and activities that you enjoy. Therefore if you are interested in any of the activities or sports we offer…GET INVOLVED! Everyone is welcome!
If you are unsure about how to do this or have any questions/suggestions for activities/sports, you can pop by the PE department and speak to any member of staff.
Lets get ACTIVE and lets get HEALTHY!
